Rubric for graphing or Criteria for making good graphs

 

  • Title, an appropriate and descriptive
    • may contain information about both axes

 

  • Axes
    • Axes should be labeled
    • Units on each axis
    • Numbers at regular intervals
    • Dependent and independent variables on correct axes
    • Scaling is appropriate

 

  • Clear data points (with easy to distinguish symbols)

 

  • Key (plotting more than one set of data with different symbols, colors, patterns …)

 

  • Range or Scaling
    • Axes should be scaled appropriately.

 

  • Appropriate choice of type of graph
    • Pie charts  - used to represent  %s or parts of a whole
    • Bar graphs – for categorical, discontinuous data sets
    • Scatter & Line graphs – for continuous data sets

 

  • Appropriate line-fitting
    • best-fit line
    • curve fitting
    • “connecting dots”
